‘Keeping Joint Pain at Bay'

Dr. Jeffrey Lisse will discuss pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to reduce pain and inflammation in those suffering from arthritis or fibromyalgia in this free lecture, open to the public, presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center
Relief for those suffering from the pain of arthritis or fibromyalgia will be addressed in “Keeping Joint Pain at Bay,” a free presentation, open to the public, on Wednesday, May 1, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, Chase Bank Auditorium (Room 8403), 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. Light refreshments are provided.
 
(Please note: There is a parking fee of $1.50 per hour, cash only, in The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus visitor/patient parking garage. Free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the UA Zone 1 permit and metered parking lot No. 2030 just south of the parking garage at East Mabel Street and Martin Avenue.)
 
Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to reduce pain and inflammation in those suffering from one of the more than 100 forms of arthritis or from fibromyalgia – a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain, diffuse tenderness and other symptoms – will be discussed by Jeffrey R. Lisse, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson.
 
Dr. Lisse will share the risks and benefits of current therapies and explain current research into pain management treatments. Recent studies show that effective communication between health care providers and patients reduces anxiety and perception of discomfort. A whole body approach to treating arthritis pain – medication, exercise and stress reduction techniques – is becoming standard.

About Dr. Lisse
 
Jeffrey R. Lisse, MD, is professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. Named to the Ethel McChesney Bilby Endowed Chair for Osteoporosis in 2000, Dr. Lisse is medical director of the Osteoporosis Program at the University of Arizona Arthritis Center (UAAC).
 
His research focuses on new therapies for arthritis and osteoporosis, and he has a special interest in these diseases among minority populations.
 
Dr. Lisse came to the UAAC in 2000 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he served for 17 years. He became chief of the Division of Rheumatology there in 1990. At the University of Texas, he was an investigator on the Lumina project, which conducted epidemiological studies on systemic lupus erythematosus, and the Genosis project, which studied systemic sclerosis. Both studies examined differences in racial groups in these diseases.
 
Dr. Lisse was a staff associate at the National Institutes of Health Southwest Studies Field Section in Phoenix, Ariz., from 1981 to 1983, and was an internal medicine consultant for the Phoenix and Sacaton Indian Health Service Hospitals during that time.
 
Dr. Lisse received his medical degree with honors at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., in 1976. He completed his internal medicine residency at the United States Public Health Services Hospital in San Francisco, Calif., in 1979 and his rheumatology fellowship at the University of California at San Diego in 1983.
 
He has published numerous articles on therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and on the epidemiology of rheumatic diseases. Dr. Lisse currently is vice president of the Arizona Osteoporosis Coalition and president of the Tucson Rheumatism Society.

The lecture is part of the 2013 series of “Living Healthy with Arthritis” monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center at the UA College of Medicine – Tucsonand supported through the Susan and Saul Tobin Endowment for Research and Education in Rheumatology.
