‘Matters of the Heart – Cardiovascular Issues and Arthritis'

Join Dr. Lori Mackstaller in this free lecture, open to the public, presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center
“Matters of the Heart – Cardiovascular Issues and Arthritis,” a free presentation, open to the public, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, Chase Bank Auditorium (Room 8403), 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. Light refreshments are provided.
 
Dr. Lori MackstallerLori Mackstaller, MD, an internal medicine physician who provides primary care to patients with heart disease, will discuss cardiovascular risk in general with an emphasis on inflammation. The inflammatory process is key in rheumatoid disease and increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension and underlying cardiac disease.
The lecture is part of the “Living Healthy with Arthritis” series of monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center.

About Dr. Mackstaller
 
Lori Mackstaller, MD, is clinical associate professor in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and is the Edwin J. Brach Foundation/Hazel and Bertram Brodie Endowed Lecturer for Heart Disease in Women at the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center.
 
Dr. Mackstaller began her career in 1967 and in 1974 became a clinical nurse specialist for Gordon Ewy, MD, a founding member of cardiology (1969), chief of the then-Section of Cardiology (1982-2010) and now director emeritus of the UA Sarver Heart Center. She set up the first anticoagulation clinic, established nurse-directed exercise stress testing, and began the Adult Fitness Program on the UA main campus. She was in charge of medical, coronary and pediatric intensive care units at University Medical Center (now The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus) for more than 10 years. She also published articles about nurse-directed anticoagulation clinics and atrial fibrillation.
 
Dr. Mackstaller earned her medical degree from the UA College of Medicine in 1997 and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center in 2000. She is board-certified in internal medicine.
 
As a member of the Sarver Heart Center, Dr. Mackstaller specializes in providing primary care to patients with heart disease. Her clinical and research interests include atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation, cardiovascular disease in octogenarians and beyond. Devoted to educating the public, especially women, about heart disease, she often lectures about women’s health and cardiovascular risk factors, treatment and prevention.

The “Living Healthy with Arthritis” monthly talks are presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center at the UA College of Medicine – Tucsonand supported through the Susan and Saul Tobin Endowment for Research and Education in Rheumatology.
 
The lectures are held the first Wednesday of each month, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, 1501 N. Campbell Ave.
