‘Re-Thinking Your Health: An Integrative Approach,’ April 1

Free lecture, open to the public, by Dr. Randy Horwitz, medical director for the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.

Is it possible to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle while dealing with chronic disease? Can your diet, activity level and even your state of mind contribute to overall health improvement, or is this simply “New Age” wishful thinking? 

Randy Horwitz, PhD, MD, an expert in the field of integrative medicine, will explore myths regarding health and disease in a free presentation, “Re-Thinking Your Health: An Integrative Approach,” open to the public, on Wednesday, April 1, 6-7:15 p.m., at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson (formerly University of Arizona Medical Center-University Campus), DuVal Auditorium (Room 2600), 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson

Dr. Horwitz will look at recent studies examining specific components of a healthy lifestyle which can affect many disease processes. He also will discuss what he and others in his specialty view as the most important contributors to improved health while managing arthritis and other health-related conditions.

As medical director for the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and associate professor with the Department of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, Dr. Horwitz’ approach is centered on transforming health care by creating, educating and actively supporting a community that embodies the philosophy and practice of healing-oriented medicine, addressing mind, body and spirit. 

Founded by Andrew Weil, MD, the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (AzCIM) developed the first and most comprehensive academic curriculum in integrative medicine. AzCIM also created and offers the largest fellowship program in the world, having trained more than 1,000 practitioners working in 47 states and 15 countries and territories. Emphasizing the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, AzCIM makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. 

Open to the public, the free 75-minute presentation will include time for questions and answers. Light refreshments will be provided. Parking is available in the Banner – UMCT visitor/patient parking garage just south of the hospital’s main entrance; please bring your parking ticket to the lecture to be validated.

About Dr. Horwitz 

Dr. Randy HorwitzFounding chair of the American Board of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Horwitz is medical director of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and an associate professor with the Department of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson.

His professional memberships include the American Medical Association; American College of Physicians; American Medical Writers Association; American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society. 

Dr. Horwitz received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in immunology and molecular biology from the University of Florida. He received his medical degree the University of Illinois and completed his residency in internal medicine at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health studying rheumatologic disorders and completed a three-year fellowship in allergy and clinical immunology at the University of Wisconsin. He has served as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Madison, Wisc. He completed his fellowship in integrative medicine at the UA. 

Dr. Horwitz is co-author of the textbook, Integrative Rheumatology (Oxford University Press, 2010), and is preparing his second textbook, Integrative Allergy and Asthma

Named to the Best Doctors in America list, Dr. Horwitz is board-certified in both internal medicine and allergy and clinical immunology. 

About the ‘Living Healthy with Arthritis’ lecture series 

The lecture is part of the “Living Healthy with Arthritis” series of free monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and supported through the Susan and Saul Tobin Endowment for Research and Education in Rheumatology. 

The final lecture of the spring 2015 series will be a special screening of the documentary The Connection: Mind Your Body,” moderated by C. Kent Kwoh, MD, director of the UA Arthritis Center, and Esther M. Sternberg, MD, research director and professor with the UA Center for Integrative Medicine. The screening will be held Wednesday, May 6, 6-8:30 p.m., in DuVal Auditorium.
