‘Exercise and the Osteoporosis-Sarcopenia Duo: Promoting a Lifetime of Bone and Muscle Health,’ March 5

Free lecture, open to the public, by Dr. Timothy G. Lohman, professor emeritus, UA Departments of Physiology and Nutritional Sciences; retired director, UA Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition; and principal investigator, BEST (Bone, Estrogen and Strength Training) Study.

How to prevent excess bone and muscle loss as we age will be addressed in “Exercise and the Osteoporosis-Sarcopenia Duo: Promoting a Lifetime of Bone and Muscle Health,” a free 75-minute presentation, including time for questions and answers, on Wednesday, March 5, at 6 p.m., at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, DuVal Auditorium (Room 2600), 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. The event is open to the public and light refreshments will be provided.

Timothy G. Lohman, PhD, professor emeritus, University of Arizona Departments of Physiology and Nutritional Sciences, and retired director of the UA Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition, will discuss cutting-edge research and information and will guide participants on practical steps that individuals at risk can take to have a lifetime of bone and muscle health. He also will address the current status of bone and muscle loss with age and the individual variation around the norms, as well as research related to the importance of exercise and preventative strategies for osteopenia, osteoporosis and sarcopenia.

Dr. Lohman has conducted research in body composition and worked in the areas of fitness and body composition in children and adults for the past 40 years. He was the principal investigator of the BEST (Bone, Estrogen and Strength Training) Study, which was designed to investigate long-term effects of strength training on bone mineral density and body composition.

Dr. Lohman has published more than 300 articles and chapters in the areas of fitness and body composition. He is co-author of “Human Body Composition,” now in its second edition, and author of the book “Advances in Body Composition Assessment.” He is a member of the International Olympic Committee Ad Hoc Body Composition Committee.

The lecture is part of the “Living Healthy with Arthritis” series of monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center and supported through the Susan and Saul Tobin Endowment for Research and Education in Rheumatology. The 75-minute lectures, with time for questions and answers, are held the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, 1501 N. Campbell Ave.
