TOPIC: "Medication Management in Older Adults"
SPEAKER: Kathleen Insel, PhD, RN, professor of nursing, UA College of Nursing. Dr. Insel's research is focused on the cognitive changes that occur with normal aging and the everyday implications of these changes with the goal of enhancing the independence of older adults for as long as possible. A quantitative methodologist, an overview of her research career is on management of chronic illness and cognitive precursors of self-management over the lifespan. Her study includes biomarkers that may help us to understand the mechanisms of age-associated cognitive decline. She is also working with children diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and their families. Dr. Insel served as a member of the Advisory Panel on Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options of Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) from April 2013 - April 2016. She also has served on a National Institute of Aging scientific advisory board for the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement.

Objectives:

  1. Distinguish age associated cognitive decline, depression, delirium and dementia acknowledging the possible
  2. overlapping nature of these conditions.
  3. Identify theoretical ideas that are offered to explain age associated changes in cognitive processes.
  4. Summarize studies based on prospective memory that can inform self-management interventions.
