ABOUT THE LECTURE

Join us as orthopaedic spine surgeon Venkat Ganapathy, MD, focuses on the latest non-surgical and surgical approaches for common and complex types of back issues, in addition to sharing the latest research on novel treatments and procedures for back pain and injury. He will discuss a wide range of treatments from the non-invasive to the most complex surgical options and will share preventive measures and the importance of understanding the anatomical and physiological contributors to back pain. He will also detail the latest diagnostic techniques while outlining the form and function of the spine and its many interconnected structures. While sharing his specialized approach, Dr. Ganapathy will discuss the benefits and risks of the latest treatments, both surgical and non-surgical. He will also detail the pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to the management of back pain.

At any given time, an estimated 31 million Americans experience back pain and experts estimate that nearly 80 percent of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives. Back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States and can be caused and influenced by a number of musculoskeletal issues. In his lecture, Dr. Ganapathy will highlight his patient-centered approach to treatment on the pathway to healing back pain.

Dr. Ganapathy serves as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the UA College of Medicine - Tucson, and Chief of the Banner - University Medicine Orthopaedic Spine Service. He is also a member of the teaching faculty for AOSpine, the leading global academic community for innovative education and research in spine care. The former Director of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Ganapathy joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine in October 2019. He has also served as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at the University of Tennessee and as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at Southern Illinois University. He is board certified by the American College of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is an associate editor for the nationally-renowned publication The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.
