Timothy G. Lohman, PhD, professor emeritus, University of ArizonaDepartments of Physiology and Nutritional Sciences, and retired director of the UA Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition, will discuss cutting-edge research and information and will guide participants on practical steps that individuals at risk can take to have a lifetime of bone and muscle health. He also will address the current status of bone and muscle loss with age and the individual variation around the norms, as well as research related to the importance of exercise and preventative strategies for osteopenia, osteoporosis and sarcopenia.
Dr. Lohman has conducted research in body composition and worked in the areas of fitness and body composition in children and adults for the past 40 years. He was the principal investigator of the BEST (Bone, Estrogen and Strength Training) Study, which was designed to investigate long-term effects of strength training on bone mineral density and body composition.
Dr. Lohman has published more than 300 articles and chapters in the areas of fitness and body composition. He is co-author of “Human Body Composition,” now in its second edition, and author of the book “Advances in Body Composition Assessment.” He is a member of the International Olympic Committee Ad Hoc Body Composition Committee.
