About the Lecture
Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States. It affects 53 million men, women and children. In this special presentation by the Director of the University of Arizona Arthritis Center, Dr. C. Kent Kwoh will discuss new information on the causes of osteoarthritis and how to prevent the disorder. He will share how this complex condition involves not only the breakdown of cartilage in joints, but also changes in the adjacent soft tissue and bone beneath the cartilage. He will offer a preview of new treatments in the pipeline and findings from his recent international studies on the association of imaging biomarkers as seen on MRI with the development of disease and disease progression. During his lecture, Dr. Kwoh will also delve into the details of the most recent advances in early detection of osteoarthritis and how this, coupled with behavioral factors, can significantly impact disease progression. He will share further identification of key risk factors for the development of osteoarthritis and osteoarthritis structural disease advancement, and how the identification of potential targets for preventive and therapeutic interventions will now factor into treatment protocol.
An internationally-recognized authority on osteoarthritis and translational research, Dr. Kwoh was recently awarded a $6.1 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue the identification of treatments to slow the progression of osteoarthritis. He has headed three other major projects funded by the National Institute of Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, including an $8.9 million Osteoarthritis Initiative contract, a $4.4 million Pivotal OAI MRI Analyses contract and the Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center for Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific journal articles and book chapters. He has served on the editorial board of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, and Arthritis Care and Research. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for numerous additional professional journals, including Arthritis and Rheumatism, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Arthritis Research and Therapy, Arthritis Care and Research, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage and the Journal of Rheumatology. Dr. Kwoh serves as Professor of Medicine and Medical Imaging in the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Director of the University of Arizona Arthritis Center and as The Charles A. L. and Suzanne M. Stephens Chair of Rheumatology.
