About the Lecture

Conservative estimates put the number of adults with arthrits or another type of rheumatic disease at more than 54 million and children suffering from these disorders at almost 300,000. People of all ages, genders and races can and do have arthritis, making it the leading cause of disability in the United States. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. Often referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Characterized by deterioration of the cartilage that cushions our bone joints, osteoarthritis occurs most frequently in the hands, hips, and knees.

As we age, the approaches we take to healthy living, particularly regarding nutrition, exercise, sleep and mindfulness, become increasingly important. Amidst the challenges of the past year, the focus on optimizing health bears even greater significance at every stage in our lives. From boosting the immune system and strengthening bones to reducing inflammation and arthritis-related pain, lifestyle practices play a key role in the fight against arthritis and numerous other chronic diseases.

Join us as internist and integrative medicine physician Param Dedhia, MD, discusses reasonable and attainable approaches to optimal health, in order to increase one’s longevity and quality of life and remain resilient in the face of stressors. Particular emphasis will be placed on achieving and maintaining healthy weight ranges, as well as on both the mental and physical benefits of exercise, sleep and stress management. Dr. Dedhia will provide suggestions for how to approach these vital aspects of health and wellbeing during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Additional topics that will be addressed include the importance of lean body mass; facts, fads and fiction surrounding the weight loss industry; and the health benefits of maintaining optimal weight with regard to joint disease, cardiorespiratory disease, diabetes and sleep apnea. Dr. Dedhia will teach new, practical approaches to improving one’s physical and mental health and wellbeing, and how to cultivate a lifelong commitment to healthy living. Taking optimal health from concept to practice, Dr. Dedhia will educate participants on how to put ideas into action.

 

About Dr. Param Dedhia

Dr. Dedhia came to Tucson from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He served as a hospital-based internist at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and as assistant director at both the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center and the Johns Hopkins Geriatric Education Center.

Born and raised in Michigan, Dr. Dedhia received his medical degree from Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine where he cultivated his passion for internal medicine along with nutrition and exercise science. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Obesity Medicine and is fellowship trained in both Geriatric Medicine and Integrative Medicine.

At Johns Hopkins, his internship, residency and fellowship spanned the fields of Internal Medicine to Gerontology. Following the mentorship he received from noted doctors and investigators, his faculty work and research was focused on applying the best of science and tradition to the daily lives of his patients. Yearning to take this further, he sought training in Mind-Body Medicine under Jim Gordon, MD, and completed the only fellowship available at the time in Integrative Medicine from the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona. These experiences inspired Dr. Dedhia to honor people not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
