About the Lecture
Dr. Hood’s upcoming unique lecture focuses on the latest approaches to surgical and non-surgical options for common and complex types of back issues, in addition to sharing the the latest research into novel treatments and procedures for back pain and injury. He will discuss a wide range of treatments from the non-invasive to the most complex surgical options and will share his approach to preventative measures and the importance of understanding the anatomical and physiological contributors to back pain. He will also detail the latest diagnostic techniques while outlining the form and function of the spine and its many interconnected structures. While sharing his specialized approach, Dr. Hood will discuss the benefits and risks of the latest treatments, both surgical and non-surgical. He will also detail the pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to the management of back pain.
Back pain can be a complicated, personal experience ... The back is a complex structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. Back pain can be uniquely complex due to a myriad of causes and a contributing factors with a wide range of treatments. Sprained ligaments, strained muscles, ruptured discs, and irritated joints can all lead to back pain. While injury often causes back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements can have painful results. At any given time, 31 million Americans experience back pain and experts estimate that nearly 80 percent of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives. Back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States and can be caused and influenced by a number of musculoskeletal issues. In his lecture, Dr. Hood will highlight his patient-centered approach to treatment on the pathway to healing back pain.
About Dr. Kenneth A. Hood
Kenneth A. Hood, DO, a Doctor of Osteopathy and Assitant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York and then went on to Medical School at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following the completion of medical school Dr. Hood completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Riverside County (California) Regional Medical Center followed by a fellowhip in spine surgery at the University of California – San Diego. Dr. Hood is currently serving as an orthopaedic spine surgeon at Banner - University Medical Center – Tucson and is an assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
Dr. Hood is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the AO Spine of North America, the North American Spine Society, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, the American Osteopathic Association and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery. He is currently researching vertebral augmentation and radiation therapy. He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed articles and has published two book chapters.
