‘Is There an Auto Immune Diet?,’ March 6

Free presentation, open to the public, by Dr. Randy Horwitz, medical director, the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; part of the 2013 series of “Living Healthy with Arthritis” monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center

The role of diet in the management of various forms of arthritis will be discussed in “Is There An Auto Immune Diet?,” a free presentation, open to the public, on Wednesday, March 6, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus, DuVal Auditorium, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. Light refreshments are provided.

(Please note: There is a parking fee of $1.50 per hour, cash only, in The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus visitor/patient parking garage. Free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the UA Zone 1 permit and metered parking lot No. 2030 just south of the parking garage at East Mabel Street and Martin Avenue.)
 
Randy Horwitz, MD, PhD, medical director for the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and associate professor, clinical medicine, with the Department of Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, will examine the role of different dietary interventions in the modern management of autoimmune diseases, including various forms of arthritis.
 
The association of nutrition and disease states has been the subject of both academic research and anecdotal folklore for generations. Typically there are three primary associations: prevention of disease with specific dietary interventions, the avoidance of certain foods or nutrients to prevent symptom exacerbations, and the enrichment of diet in order to improve symptoms.

About Dr. Horwitz
 
Dr. Horwitz received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in immunology and molecular biology from the University of Florida. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed his residency in internal medicine at University Hospitals – Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a post-doctoral fellow studying rheumatologic disorders at the National Institutes of Health, and also completed a three-year fellowship in allergy and clinical immunology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he specialized in asthma and allergic disease management. He then served as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and at the VA Medical Center in Madison. In 2003, he completed a two-year fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. He also is co-author of the textbook, Integrative Rheumatology (Oxford University Press, 2010).

The lecture is part of the 2013 series of “Living Healthy with Arthritis” monthly talks presented by the University of Arizona Arthritis Center at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and supported through the Susan and Saul Tobin Endowment for Research and Education in Rheumatology.
