TOPIC: Racial Variation in Healthcare: The Case of Joint Replacement Utilization
Said A. Ibrahim, MD, MPH, MBA is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair in the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research, Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Ibrahim is also the founding-Chief of the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation, which houses Weill Cornell Medicine's new Executive MBA/MS in healthcare program. Previously, Dr. Ibrahim was Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. He Co-Directed of the VA National Center of Innovation for Health Equity Research & Promotion (CHERP) and the Director of the Philadelphia CHERP.
A graduate of Oberlin College and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Ibrahim completed his internship and residency training in medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He later attended the Program in Clinical Effectiveness and received an MPH degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He holds an MBA degree from MIT's Sloan School of Management.
As a clinician-investigator, Dr. Ibrahim continues to lead a well-established research program on racial disparities in the utilization of joint replacement for the management of end-stage osteoarthritis (OA). He conducted foundational work identifying lower preference for surgery among minority patients as a key reason for this disparity. He followed this work with prospective studies revealing that decision aids that deliver evidence-based educational content significantly increase minority patients' willingness to undergo elective joint replacement. His scholarly work in this area has been continuously federally-funded for more than 15 years. Overall, his work has led to more 130 peer reviewed publications in high impact journals including NEJM, JAMA, Annals of Internal medicine, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Medical Care, Arthritis, and Rheumatism, to mention a few. A K24 award from NIH/NIAMS supports his mentoring of future generations of health equity investigators in a broad range of areas, including musculoskeletal care.
Dr. Ibrahim is the previous recipient of the Harold Amos Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award, and both entry-level and advanced-level VA Health Services Research and Career Development Awards. His national roles include member, NIAMS Clinical Trials Study Section (2011-2015); Secretary-Elect and Secretary, Society for General Internal Medicine (2014-2017); Council member, National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities (2016); Associate Editor, American Journal of Public Health (2003-2015);Member, Editorial Board, JGIM (2012-2015).Chair, Program Committee for the 2006 Annual Meeting of the SGIM; SGIM Council (2007-2009);Treasurer and Executive Committee Member, International Society for Equity in Health (2006).
